  • Speed reduction trial to commence on Albany Highway through Narrikup
  • The speed will be dropped from 110km/h to 90 km/h, following a Main Roads Audit

Member for Warren-Blackwood, Jane Kelsbie, has welcomed the announcement of a speed reduction trial on a stretch of Albany Highway near Mount Barker.

In February 2022 Main Roads commissioned an Independent Road Safety Audit of the Highway which included input from the local community, including the Narrikup Road Safety Group.

Following the audit, Main Road have undertaken a number of remediation actions, including the relocation of signs, pavement marking treatments, pot hole repairs, additional signage and the pruning of vegetation to improve safety at these intersections.

The audit also recommended examining a speed limit reduction through sections of Albany Highway through Narrikup.

Following conversations with Main Roads and the Member for Warren-Blackwood, Jane Kelsbie, the Minister for Transport, Rita Saffioti, has asked Main Roads to commence a speed reduction trial, dropping the speed from 110km/h to 90 km/h.

Further investigations into additional upgrades to the road, such as another slip lane, will continue.

“This is fantastic news for the Narrikup Road Safety Group, the Shire of Plantagenet, and all road users.

“I’ve been advocating on their behalf to the Minister, and I’m pleased to see that this has resulted in a speed reduction trial, on top of the work that Main Roads has already completed to make this stretch of road safer.

“I know how important this issue is to the community and recognise the impact that accidents and road trauma have had on first responders and the community as a whole.

“I’ll continue to work with residents, the Shire of Plantagenet and the Narrikup Road Safety Group to ensurewe can deliver improved road safety outcomes for the local community.
